[...click on headline to read full story] UP TO 400 British and Australian soldiers who were killed during the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916 and buried by the Germans in mass graves, are to be exhumed from their recently-discovered burial pits and re-interred in individual graves in a purpose-built cemetery. The gruesome find was made in June 2008 by a team of archaeologists from Glasgow University working in northern France for the Australian Government, British MOD and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. We have recently recorded our 1 millionth viewer – a magnificent return for the site that was launched just over one year ago in the north east of England. Since then the Old Photo Forum’s reputation has spread far and wide and we get visits from people living all over the world as well as UK residents, all enjoying a trip down memory lane. It’s great, too, when we get email to say how much folks enjoy exploring the site and finding a personal connection or two. Visitors such as one member from Vancouver, Canada who discovered a photo from her childhood here in the UK.

HMS Petard, a 1,540 ton destroyer, must have been a stirring sight as it made its way down river, ready for its commissioning exercises and a visit to South Africa before steaming to the Mediterranean for active service…and a place in history. Within a year Tommy would also be on active service as a canteen assistant aboard the same vessel, HMS Petard, and destined to become part of a remarkable story that would change the course of the Second World War.
