Blyth's new chalets

Original 1950s chalets
Once a lively hub of the seaside town, Blyth promenade and its surrounding Links area has been part of an £800,000 restoration project, which has seen the new beach chalets constructed and the promenade transformed. Blyth Links has benefited from significant investment in recent years and is expected to reinforce the popularity of Blyth Beach with visitors both locally and nationally.
One of Blyth’s life-long residents says the transformation of the town’s new seafront has transported him back almost 60 years to the glory days of this Northumberland town’s vibrant promenade and beach chalets.
Gordon Smith (67), who has lived in Blyth for most of his life and has welcomed the restoration of the iconic beach chalets, said: “I absolutely love the design of the new chalets and the bright colours certainly help to liven up the beach, just like the original ones did back in the 1950s.”
Gordon remembers the year during the late seventies, when his daughter was just a toddler, that he and his wife hired one of the original chalets: “We have some very fond memories as we would pack a lunch, drive down to the beach and spend the full day as a family there. It didn’t matter what the weather was like as we’d sit out in the sun and if it rained then we’d wait inside the chalet for it to clear. It meant we could visit the beach all year round which my daughter loved.”

Gary Wilkinson (left) and Tom Kelly
Following on from the success of the widely acclaimed film Little Ireland, film maker Gary Wilkinson and writer Tom Kelly are to join forces for a second time to produce what they hope to be their next hit film.
The documentary will take a look at the stories of significant people in Jarrow’s unique history such as the Venerable Bede, William Jobling – the last man to publically hang in the North East and Ellen Wilkinson – the Labour MP who lead the Jarrow crusade.
Taking the form of a narrated road trip around the town, the film will feature famous Jarrow landmarks and interviews with local people who will share their own memories and views on the historical subjects.
