One Million Milestone

499241297 mBD4G S One Million MilestoneTHE OLD PHOTO FORUM is fast becoming one of the nation’s favourite photographic archives.

We have recently recorded our 1 millionth viewer – a magnificent return for the site that was launched just over one year ago in the north east of England.

Durham City keeps mayoral tradition

475483014 JweMv M Durham City keeps mayoral traditionCIVIC TRADITION DATING back over 400 years is to be preserved after a countrywide local government shake-up.

The post of Mayor of Durham will be retained after the City Council disappears in a few week’s time to make way for a single unitary authority. A Charter Trust is to be created to preserve the City’s civic, mayoral and ceremonial traditions which date back to 1602.

Government regulations allow the County Council to anticipate the first year’s running costs and councillors have agreed a recommendation from the Charter Trustees designate to provide £132,155 to cover all mayoral expenses over the next financial year. This will include travelling expenses and hosting formal civic functions to providing administrative support and insuring the historic chain of office.

The costs work out at an extra £5 on the Council Tax for Band D properties through the existing City of Durham district – and pro-rata for other Bands – and will be re-considered by the Charter Trustees later in the year when any amendment will be incorporated into the following year’s budget.
