Magpies take stage for centenary exhibition

801529899 c4tRY S Magpies take stage for centenary exhibitionHere’s one for the Time Machine’s football fans.

The Theatre Royal Newcastle is teaming up with historians from Newcastle United Football Club to host an exclusive exhibition to mark 100 years since the legendary team won their first ever trophy.

Local Heroes -The Cup Comes Hyem is a one-off exhibition of telling the story of the 1910 triumph and homecoming through words, beautifully restored images and memorabilia.

A century ago this April, back in 1910, the Black ’n’ Whites lifted their first trophy – and this after five attempts to do so. They had won three league titles but try as they did they could not bring the FA Cup to Tyneside. Until 1910 that is, when United’s Edwardian Masters became a celebrated team and the best side in the country. The team have since played in no fewer than 13 FA Cup finals and lifted the famous trophy on six occasions. Few clubs have a more colourful history in the competition.

United faced Barnsley in 1910. The team played two games against the Tykes in that year, a 1-1 draw at the Crystal Palace in London, then a 2-0 victory in Liverpool at Goodison Park.

Club historian Paul Joannou said: “This is a one-off and it is important to mark the Club’s centenary of our first trophy victory. Back then the FA Cup was the competition to win – now it’s the Premier League and Champions League, but 100 years ago the FA Cup was king.”

Paul adds: “United were also very last winners of the ‘old’ FA Cup trophy, a historic piece of football silverware. It was gifted to Lord Kinnaird afterwards and a new trophy made – the current one we are all familiar with.”

Restoration photographer Jan Radwanski notes: “We have enhanced and enlarged some of the historic images of those cup finals and victory procession back on Tyneside; the results are outstanding and never seen before in such detail.”

The Exhibition is being held at the Theatre Royal Newcastle on Grey Street, in the majestic Olivier Suite.

Richard Berg Rust, Director of Development at the Theatre Royal said: “We are only too pleased to host this exhibition. Newcastle United and the Theatre Royal are two great historic institutions in the region and play a major part in people’s lives. St James’s Park is a theatre of sorts too. We’re very proud of our history and traditions and our partnership in the exhibition celebrates this.”

Newcastle United’s first FA Cup Victory: The Cup Comes Hyem (A Centenary Exhibition 1910-2010) is to be held over Easter weekend and is being put together by Jan Radwanski of Jan-Prints and Newcastle United’s official historian Paul Joannou. It will feature memorabilia from 1910, as well as one of the actual FA Cup winners’ medals from the triumph.
